Mrs. Kelzer/Kindergarten Parent Information

School Day 8:00 - 3:03
The Children will be let in the building at 7:50.  They will be sent to their rooms at this time.  I will be waiting for them there.  If your child comes late you need to make sure that they check into the office before coming to class.  All early pick-ups will be from the office also.

Breakfast 7:30 - 8:00
Breakfast cost is .80 a day.  Children are let in the building when they arrive on the bus.

Office Hours 7:20 - 7:50
I will be available every morning at 7:20.  It might be best to set up an appointment with me in advance if you want to come in to meet.  I am usually available everyday, but sometimes I will not be here.  I am flexible with my meeting times and I will work with your schedule.

Attendance
We ask that you call by 9:00 on days when your child will be absent or tardy.  If your child will be going anywhere different that unusual after school, please bring a note or call the office to let me know.  I WILL NOT TAKE A CHILD'S WORK FOR DIFFERENT GO HOME PLANS. I HAVE TO HAVE PARENTAL CONTACT note/phone call) TO VERIFY CHANGE.  I WILL SEND YOUR CHILD HOME THE "USUAL" WAY UNLESS I HEAR FROM YOU.
THIS IS FOR YOUR CHILDS SAFETY!!

Early Dismissal
Be sure you have a plan for early dismissal days and let me know what it is.  The radio stations that have this information are listed in the handbook that you received at registration.  They are also listed on the River Ridge website.  LISTEN TO THE RADIO EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK IT WILL HAPPEN.  I DO NOT WANT TO SEND YOUR CHILD HOME WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW HE/SHE IS COMING.

Lunches
Kindergarten lunch time is at 10:55.  The cost for a meal per day is $1.50.  You can buy lunches daily, weekly, or by the semester.  Please send all money in an envelope or a film canister with your child's name on it and label it "LUNCH".  Please pay on the first school day of the week for all lunches you child will eat that week.  If your child brings a cold lunch, be sure that their name is on it.  NO refrigeration is available.  Milk can be purchased for .20 cents.  NO POP is allowed in the cafeteria.  They will be dismissed from the lunch room around 11:15 for recess.

Recess
11:15-11:40 am
Be sure you child has the correct clothing to match the weather.  In the winter they must have snow pants, boots, hat and mittens if they want to play in the snow.  Send extra clothing just to make sure (an extra pair of DRY socks is a good idea.)  The weather can change from morning to afternoon.  Plan to be more safe than sorry.  We will be doing many messy activities so please don't send you child in good clothes that can't get dirty.

Snacks
We will be having a daily snack.  Every child will be required to send in a class supply of individually wrapped snacks to be stored in the snack cabinet.  Hopefully this will eliminate the need to have a snack schedule, and be using the leftover, the number of times you need to send in a snack will be cut down. ONCE A MONTH I will be asking for snack donations.  Read you Friday note for when our supply is getting low.  If you want to send in a homemade snack go ahead.  We will eat it that day.

Friday Folders
I try to send information notes, calendars, and messages on the last attendance day of the week.  Along with this note there will be the child's completed work for the week. There will also be notes that come every Friday.  Also feel free to write any comments on the comment sheet and send it back.  I want to keep the communication open.

Report Cards
Report cards come home four times a year.  Parent/Teacher conferences are after the first grading period.  We will sit down and go over your child's report card at this meeting.  I can answer any questions then.  It is important to remember that at Kindergarten level most subjects are activity oriented rather than seat work.  They will receive marks for Music, Art and P.E..

Book Reports
Four(4) book reports are required monthly from September through May.  We participate in the Happy Reader Program from Happy Joes.  The children receive a free personal pan pizza each quarter if they complete their book reports.  The children who do ALL FOUR BOOK REPORTS EVERY MONTH will participate in an all school pizza party in May sponsored by Happy Hoes. The children who do not turn in their book reports every month will not get to attend this party.  Remember at the Kindergarten level its your responsibility to help your child meet their goal.

Book Orders
Several times during the year I will be sending home book orders.  If you want to purchase any of these books just return the order to me with your child's name on it by the date stated in the newsletter.  You may write one check made out to SCHOLASTIC for all the book orders.

Birthdays
If you want to send in a special birthday treat to celebrate you child's birthday let me know.  In May we will celebrate the summer birthday so no one is left out.  If you send a cake, please send in a knife, plates, and forks.

Medicine
No medicine of any kind can be given in the classroom.  The school nurse will dispense any medicine needed.  Cough drops are an exception.

Parties
We have three parties a year, Halloween, Christmas, and Valentines.  We have treats and an Easter Egg hunt for Easter (but no party).

Discipline
I don't believe in punishing a kid on the first offense unless it is something that has to be addressed immediately.  I also make it their responsibility to follow the rules.  If after several warnings, inappropriate behavior persists the card changes go into effect.
1st card: (yellow) Warning
2nd Card: (red) 5 minutes immediately in the time-out room in the office
3rd Card: (purple) 10 minutes immediately in the time-out room in the office
If there are more than 2 card changes in one day...they will have to see Mr. Scarano and you will probably get a phone call.
If there is something you need t be informed about, I will send home a note to explain the problem and how it was handled in class.  The note should be signed by you and returned to me the next day.  You may also communicate any concerns or comments on this note.  I don't send home a note for every discipline incident that will occur.  I will let you know the important things that go on in our classroom.

Rest Time
The children will rest for about 20 minutes in the afternoon.  During this time they listen to music and lay quietly.  Sometimes we may put in a movie during this down time.  They are not expected to sleep. But it is ok if they do.

Field Trips
We will take field trips during the year.  I will let you know about these as they come up.

Labels
Please label everything that comes to school with you child. And Please do not send any toys.

Shoes
Please work on teaching you child to tie their shoes.  I make it my policy to stop tying shoes for the childen after Christmas break.  There is only on of me and I could use up many teaching minutes out of the day to tie shoes.  One of the best things we can teach our children is independence.  Gym shoes with Velcro are for safety purposes.  No one wants a child tripping on loose shoe strings during fast physical activity.
